Another Language

When first learning Qigong or Taijiquan the emphasis is on the physical. One must learn the forms, the weight shifting, the alignments etc. Then we shift to an intellectual stage where we first focus on remembering the sequence. Next we intellectually learn the “what and why” of the forms.

After we have all that down pat, then we can internalize. This is where the gold is. When we start to look inside we are presented with yet another challenge. Invariably, when we actually start to listen, we realize that our bodies are communicating with us and the communication language the body uses is “feelings” or sensations.

If you have any inclination of digging down to mine the gold of Qigong or Taiji practice, it is imperative to learn the language of feelings. Do not be fooled by the mind’s interpretation. If the communication/lesson comes to you in the form of words then obviously there has been interpretation by the mind and thus a loss of information.

Listening and learning from feelings is relatively easy if you can get quiet enough. The first step is to “listen” for “good” or “bad” feelings. This is gives you an indication to either stop or change what you are doing or to continue. When you continue a practice because you are getting positive feedback from the body then you can listen for even more information such as the results of qi circulation.

If I was to interpret some of the body’s language into words just so you could start to develop a rudimentary dictionary, you could listen for:

Pain or strain

Imbalance

Tension

Warmth or tingling

Harmony

Floating

You get the picture. Start to listen to what the body is trying to communicate to you. Don’t put any energy into the words that pop into your mind. Instead use the biofeedback to create a continuous loop system where you listen and respond with more of the same, or make changes that result in more positive feedback.

Good luck in learning this new language.
