Definition of “Master”

Internal art systems like Taijiquan and qigong are long and winding roads that literally never end. Along the way the most diligent of students will pass through definitive moments where they pick up labels of accomplishment often coming by way of “recognition of distinction”.
Some of these meaningful and respectful labels are:
Sifu – respected teacher
Sigung – Sifu’s teacher
Master – recognition bestowed upon a worthy student by a Grandmaster
Grandmaster – original developer of a new system, art or school that gathers a respectable following
But what are the qualities that are recognizable in the individuals that justify their distinction from the myriad of other students of the arts?
I see a Master - as one who has risen to a level where they are competent in the four basic understandings, which are:
Physical
Emotional
Mental
Spiritual
Physically, a Master has a complete understanding of the physical aspects of his art and can perform the required forms/sets/techniques effortlessly while adhering to the principles of the art form.
Emotionally, a Master has internalized the lifestyle of the system and has thus become one with the art. He is literally a manifestation of that particular art. He walks the talk and personifies the highest ethical and moral standards.
Mentally, a Master has a comprehensive intellectual understanding of his/her art form. He has historical teachings and perspectives to draw upon and has internalized the lessons learned. This allows him to stand upon his own internal understanding when participating with others. A Master might quote one of the classics or his teacher, but the bulk of his transmissions will be from his unique and knowledgeable perspective.
Spiritually, a Master has “tasted” the extreme subtleties of his art. He has refined the knowledge he has garnered into wisdom. He understands the “endgame” and knows how his art can contribute to the enlightenment of all that seek his guidance.
There is one more extremely important factor that must be personified by any individual who would accept the distinction of “Master”. It is imperative that a Master be able to transmit all of the above.
A true Master lives to participate in the evolutionary enlightenment of the rest of humanity, compassionately and patiently doing what is appropriate in order to raise the consciousness of everyone he meets.
With respect,
Rod

All of the above is my personal perspective based on my own experience and understandings, limited in scope due to the article being a blog as opposed to an essay.
