Two Paths
23/08/2013 08:28At our studio we teach abdominal breathing as well as reverse breathing techniques and we explain the physical differences of these two techniques. We also attempt to explain that one is a passive breath and one is an intentional breath.
Abdominal breathing (Buddhist breath) is passive. One just breathes normally. The belly goes out on the inhale and retracts on the exhale. There is nothing to do except build ones lung capacity.
Reverse breathing (Taoist breath) is the exact opposite in that the belly retracts towards the spine on the inhale and expands on the exhale. This technique usually takes some getting used to and thus requires ones attention to perform. This breath can also be used for inner alchemy purposes where the student attempts (through technique and will) to evolve along the spiritual path.
These two types of breath are kind of like... life.
One can take a passive approach to life by going with the flow and just letting the chips fall as they may or one can take a more active/intentional approach and try to create the type of life they desire for themselves.
These are two distinct paths. One might be thought of as Human Be-ings and the other Human Do-ings. Neither is better than the other. They both have their pros and cons. The ability to see how they can be used to ones advantage is knowledge. When one makes use of that knowledge then one gains skill. When one can then use their skill appropriately to create the greatest good for the greatest number then that is wisdom.
The point is to build our repertoire of skills in order to progress.
The question is - progess towards what?
Peace
